The Thrill

THE THRILL -

I was driving around earlier today, running errands and trying to check off all the items on the list. I put a CD in (yes, I still listen to those) and the peaceful song gloriously complimented the awe-inspiring scenery of orange, yellow, red and green, draped against a serene, blue-sky backdrop.

I was struck by beauty and stilled by calmness, both scenically and sonically. Immediately, I began to reminisce of a simpler time when the biggest things in life were really the smallest.

Before the intrusion of social media into every aspect of our daily lives, I remember the thrill. I remember the anticipation of waiting for a favorite song to come on the radio, a favorite video to come on TV or a favorite celebrity to make a media appearance – and then the thrill when it happened! Such a thrill!

There was such joy and excitement, then, to get a glimpse of the unknown. Every day was filled with wide-eyed wonder of what the day would hold. There was a thrill when the phone rang – “Whoever could it be?” There was a thrill when spouses came home from work, or when children brought a friend over for dinner.

Things felt new and exciting each day, not overly planned or contrived. These days, it seems like most everything is ordered ahead of time, revealed ahead of time, or posted before it’s time.

There is a beauty in suspense and in not knowing. Anticipation of things to come gives us a thrill. I suspect this is one of the reasons so many people love the four seasons so much, but especially the fall.

One never knows what vast assortment of colors they will see as they drive down the highways and byways of life - the master artistry that is waiting just a little farther down the road. You only have to keep going around the next bend to see it.

Seasons give us a thrill in the midst of life's changes. We look with awe and wonder as we go from showers to flowers, from leaves to snow. They gently remind us that all of life ebbs and flows.

When one season of life is pulling you down, hold on... the next one is coming soon. It will have its own beauty and its own trials and tribulations but, the beauty will still be there - if you don't lose the thrill.

Hold onto the thrill.

The next season will bring us “A thrill of hope.” The weary world will rejoice. Be filled with hope as you anticipate the arrival of The King of Kings and Lord of Lords. His time will come, too.

Until then, look at the beauty all around you, and don’t lose the thrill.
